Basics

Cellulite is caused by a 60- to 100-fold enlargement of subcutaneous fat islands. A fat island consists of numerous fat cells embedded in a network of connective tissue. Cellulite forms when the processing of chemical substances in these structures is disturbed, leading to the formation of dimpled skin with a structure similar to that of an orange peel. Being overweight may contribute to this condition, however even women who are not overweight can have enlarged fat islands that bulge upwards through the connective tissue.

The predisposition for cellulite is determined by sex (few men have cellulite), age, diet, and lifestyle. Sitting for long periods, insufficient exercise, smoking, eating fast food and wearing clothing that is too tight can all contribute to the formation of cellulite. Genetic factors influencing the formation of cellulite have also been identified. Further contributing to this condition are hormones, in particular estrogens, which play an important role in developing cellulite.

The appearance of cellulite can only be improved if absorption, transport and conversion (ie cell metabolism) of the chemical substances in the problem areas are improved. To begin with, excess fat must be broken up and metabolized. Additionally, the structure of the connective tissue must be maintained. The troublesome “dimples” associated with cellulite are usually found in the subcutaneous areas of the buttocks, hips and thighs, and less frequently in the upper arms, knees and abdomen. Ideally, the body turns fats into energy whenever needed, and fat storage and metabolism are well-balanced, with fat metabolism subject to variations in the concentration of glucose and fatty acids.

To help combat cellulite, a two-way strategy, involving both external and internal application and geared towards promoting healthy metabolism, is necessary. Of primary importance is the promotion of healthy fat-burning, which can be accomplished with specific phyto-nutrients. A dehydrating effect is also important, as helping to eliminate stored water speeds up the reduction of the fat islands where cellulite occurs.

Effects
